Tuscia is a land of ancient spirituality, dotted with sanctuaries, hermitages, and convents nestled in nature — often far from the beaten tourist paths. These quiet and evocative places are ideal destinations for those seeking reflection, meditation, and an authentic connection with the faith and history of the region. 🌳🙏

🌳🏛️ Sanctuary of the Madonna della Quercia (Viterbo)

At the gates of Viterbo, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Quercia is the most important religious site in the province. Its history began in 1417 with an image of the Virgin and Child painted on a wooden panel and placed in the branches of an oak tree. After a miracle occurred in 1467, the sanctuary was built and completed just two years later.

Inside, you’ll find stunning terracottas by Andrea della Robbia, two monumental cloisters (one Gothic, one Renaissance), and a massive bell tower. The Virgin was crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1984, confirming the deep spiritual bond with the people of Tuscia. 👑🕊️

How to get there from Viterbo:🚗 Only a 5-minute drive via Strada Bagnaia-Viterbo/SP11. The sanctuary has ample parking.🚶‍♂️ About 30 minutes on foot for a peaceful walk.

💧🕍 Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ruscello (Vallerano)

In Vallerano, this sanctuary was built after a miraculous event: in 1604, while restoring a fresco, painter Stefano Menicucci saw blood flow from the Virgin’s mouth. The miracle led to the construction of the current church, designed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola and completed in 1609.

Built in local peperino stone and brick, it features a magnificent 17th-century organ and a high altar in polychrome marble. The Festival of the Miracle is celebrated every July 5th. 🎨⛪

How to get there from Viterbo:🚗 About 30 minutes via SS675 south, then turn onto SP25. The sanctuary is just outside the village center.

🏞️🛐 Hermitage of San Girolamo (Monte Fogliano – Vetralla)

Hidden in the beech forest of Monte Fogliano, this is one of Tuscia’s most mystical spots.Founded in 1525 by Fra Girolamo Gabrielli, it is entirely carved into rock — a tiny cave chapel and a prayer crypt. The trail to the hermitage leads through an ancient, silent forest, offering a powerful sense of spirituality and solitude. 🌲🛤️

How to get there from Viterbo:🚗 About 20–25 minutes via SS2 Cassia south toward Vetralla. From Vetralla’s center, follow the marked dirt road toward Monte Fogliano, then walk 20 minutes on foot through a signed forest path.

🕊️🌲 Convent of Sant’Angelo (Monte Fogliano)

A short distance away, the Convent of Sant’Angelo was built on the remains of an old Benedictine oratory.Founded in 1744, it has withstood suppression and restoration, maintaining its peaceful and secluded charm.Today, it is ideal for spiritual retreats, nature walks, and silent meditation. 🏡🌿

How to get there from Viterbo:🚗 Follow the same directions as for the Hermitage of San Girolamo. After reaching the forest road from Vetralla, signs indicate the path to "Sant’Angelo" along the route.
